How to Style Curly Hair: 5 Tips You Need to Know

Styling curly hair is no easy job. Don’t get me wrong – I love my natural curls! Yet, I’ve found myself wishing all too often for a different hair type. Straight hair is so much easier to handle, isn’t it?

I’m sure every curly-haired woman out there has had similar thoughts at some point-living with curly hair isn’t as easy as it looks!

However, the curls are here to stay, so we’d best learn to love them, which includes knowing how to style them.

To help you tame your wild curls, I’ve compiled a list of my favourite styling tips below:

1.    Regularly Trim Your Hair

Regularly trimming the ends of your mane will help ensure your curls stay in good shape. The best thing a quick trim can do for you is to rid your hair of those pesky split ends.

If you’re trying to grow your hair out, trimming the ends may seem counterproductive. However, I’m here to assure you that this is not the case. In fact, trimming the rough ends of your hair can help it grow back better.

When you cut off your split ends, you prevent your hair from further damage, ultimately leaving it healthier than it was before, even if it’s an inch or two shorter.

2.    Combing Your Hair From the Bottom Up

This may come as a surprise to most people, but it really helps to begin combing your curls from the bottom instead of the top. While the majority of folks prefer starting at the roots, this simply won’t do for us, curly-haired ladies.

If you start combing from the roots, your hair will be a massive, tangled mess by the time you reach the tips. The best way to avoid this from happening is to comb from the bottom up.

Curly hair is prone to breakage-more so than other hair types. If you comb from the bottom up, you’re giving your hair a chance to detangle itself in its problem area-the tips. Once you’ve sorted through the ends, the rest of your hair will be remarkably easy to comb through.

3.    Use Conditioner!

This one may sound like a no-brainer; everyone knows just how important conditioner is when it comes to keeping your curls soft and flexible. However, what most people miss out on is checking to see if they’re using the right kind of conditioner.

My advice is to head over to your bathroom right now and read through your conditioner’s bottle. Does it mention anything related to curly hair? If not, toss it out and switch over to a curly hair conditioner!

4.    Tame That Mane with Some Hair Mousse

Some people choose to stop at the conditioner, but those who know beauty comes with boldness dare to go even further. If you’re aiming to get flawless curls, try including hair mousse into your beauty routine.

Mousse does an excellent job of keeping your curls in place while still allowing them to retain their free-flowing bounciness. Products like hair gel will succeed at keeping your coils in place but will make them too rigid to be any fun.

5.    Blow Your Curls Away with a Diffuser

If you want to go even further with your beauty regimen, it’s time to bring out the good old diffuser. Diffusers can easily be attached to your hairdryer’s open end and change the way hot air enters your curls. This helps to minimize frizz and makes your hair look elegant and tamed.

Using your hairdryer without a diffuser can significantly increase frizz, which makes it harder to achieve that effortless, flowy hair look we’re all aiming for.

Final Thoughts

I know the struggle of keeping your curly hair in good shape. So, now that you know my top 5 hair taming tips why not go ahead and try them out on your own curls? If sometimes it seems that no matter what you do your curls aren’t tameable – just accept it and have fun with your hair. Your curls are unique just like you.
