Did you know that when you are stressed, you can see it all over your face? I am one of this people. If I feel stress in any way, you will definitely see it all over my face. I wear my heart on my sleeve and I’m one of those people where you’ll see every emotions on my face. It’s funny but I never noticed this about myself before and hubby pointed it out. He always knows when I’m tense or stress about something. It’s funny, but when he saw the title of this post, he smiled and said ‘you wear your stress on your face’. Some people believe they internalise their stress really well, and no one can see it. You’d be surprised how wrong they are. Rather than wear the stress all over your body, dealing with it and finding a solution for the upset is the key.
We wear our stress in different ways. Some people notice their skin breaking out as it reacts to the stress hormone, causing unsightly spots and blackheads as well as a change in skin type. Some people feel the physical effects with upset tummies, headaches and feeling generally unwell. The stress hormone lowers the immune system as the body is upset and fighting, so it takes its toll on the body. For others, stress reactions mean hair going prematurely grey or even falling out, which causes further stress and becomes a vicious cycle.
To be able to combat any of these, you first need to identify what the root of the stress is and resolve it. If things are hard at work, you need to have a meeting with your employer to discuss it and make things easier. When it’s the home that’s the problem, it’s a little more difficult as it’s your living space, but it doesn’t mean you can’t work it out. In the meantime, you’ve got to fake it until you make it and make the changes you can so that you aren’t wearing your stress all over your face! With these tips, you can make life a little easier to cope with:
Skin: Stress can cause outbreaks so to be able to keep up with any horrible spots breaking out, be vigorous in your skincare routine. Be sure to cleanse, tone and moisturise every evening and close pores with a splash of cold water. You need some of the natural oils in the skin anyway, and scrubbing them all away can be detrimental, but keep your regular routines and change the facewashes you use to suit an oilier skin type.
Hair: Hair going grey prematurely is a hormonal thing and if you are watching threads of white take up home on your head, it’s time to break out the box dye! Either that, or embrace the grey trend that is rocketing through the style world. if stress is making your hair fall out in clumps, your self-esteem can be affected greatly, having a knock-on effect to your stress levels. Finding the best hair extensions for your hair to cover any patches and give some volume to thinning hair can really help the situation until the stress passes and the fall-out slows down.
Illness: Lowered immune systems mean a higher susceptibility to bugs and illness, which is a classic stress reaction. Meditation, eating well and exercise can all combat these symptoms, as well as a healthy dose of vitamins to keep the bugs at bay.
Don’t wear your stress if you don’t have to, and if you do, wear it like armour until things get better.
