What Makes Someone Irresistible? Gen Z Says These Are the Most Attractive Fragrances Right Now
A new AXE survey of over 2,000 Americans aged 16 to 30 set out to uncover what defines magnetic presence — or, as Gen Z calls it, rizz.
While personality and style matter, the findings show that scent is one of the most underrated attraction signals. Over 1 in 4 respondents said smelling good instantly boosts someone’s pull. For younger daters, fragrance is increasingly viewed as part of what gives someone that “X-factor” energy.
When asked which types of scents they associate with confidence, charm and romantic appeal, these five categories topped the list:

Bold and intense scents ranked highest overall, taking the number one spot among both men and women. Around 1 in 3 respondents selected this style, pointing to its strong link with confidence, presence and attraction. These richer profiles such as oud, amber, leather and spices had broad appeal across the board and showed no significant drop across age groups. Whether dating, socialising or simply wanting to be remembered, this was the go-to scent style across Gen Z.
#2 – Fresh & Clean (citrus, mint, aquatic)

Coming in second overall, fresh and clean scents were most popular with men and more strongly associated with effortless appeal. These bright, familiar blends including citrus and aquatic notes were especially preferred by respondents aged 24 to 30. This suggests a slight age shift toward practicality and polish. While not the most standout, they carried strong everyday attraction value, particularly among those looking to keep things simple and sharp.
#3 – Sweet & Creamy (vanilla, tonka, caramel)

Ranking third, sweet and creamy scents found more favour with women and older Gen Zs. This category, made up of soft gourmand blends like vanilla and tonka, was more likely to be selected by those in the 24–30 age range. It hints at a growing appreciation for warmth and familiarity over louder, trend-driven notes. These scents were seen as inviting and comforting, often linked with romantic appeal and close interactions.
#4 – Playful & Fruity (cherry, watermelon, mango)

This scent style ranked fourth overall but stood out most clearly among younger Gen Zs. Those aged 16 to 23 were more likely to select fruity profiles, especially cherry, which has gained major cultural traction on platforms like TikTok. While it didn’t top the rankings, around 1 in 5 respondents chose this category. It signals growing relevance among those leaning into playful self-expression and individuality through fragrance.
#5 – Skin-like & Subtle (musk, cashmere, soft woods)

Subtle, skin-like fragrances rounded out the top five. These softer profiles had stronger appeal among women and respondents in the 24–30 range, where understated scent was more commonly preferred. Rather than making a statement, these fragrances sit close to the skin and offer a more intimate kind of presence. While less likely to grab attention immediately, they continue to hold value among those who favour a more refined, less-is-more approach to scent and dating style.
Fragrance = Flirting Power
Among younger daters, fragrance is fast becoming a confidence shortcut. In fact, nearly 1 in 3 said the right scent makes them feel more attractive. Those who associate scent with ‘rizz’ were significantly more likely to choose bold, intense fragrance styles – suggesting fragrance plays a growing role in how Gen Z presents themselves socially and romantically.
Even in an era of dating apps and digital-first impressions, scent remains a real-world cue for presence and appeal.
What This Means for Dating in 2025
Whether it’s bold leather, fresh citrus, or soft musk, scent is one of the few personal details people remember long after the moment has passed. For Gen Z, building “rizz” isn’t just about what you say — it’s also about what you leave behind. And in many cases, that starts with how you smell.
