The Bold Feminine
Canadian fashion darling, ELIZA FAULKNER, has released her newest collection on, February 23, 2023.
The inspiration for this collection is called ‘Toile de Joy’. A play on the word ‘Toile de Jouy’ which translates to ‘Cloth of Jouy’ – Jouy is the region this type of print was originally made in France.
Our translation is Cloth of Joy – a collection that is joyful, fresh, and slightly irreverent. I was inspired by those scenes of Kirstin Dunst in Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette where she frolics around the fields with her friends at the Petit Trianon. I wanted to emulate that feeling of joy and possibility that young women have when they’re all together. Full of easy-to-wear corsets, Toile de Jouy fabrics with electric coloured trims, and pastel hued baby tees, the collection is playful, feminine, slightly bucolic, and totally contemporary.
We’ve played with some of our best styles to make them bolder and more wearable. We added ruffles and frills to our Work jacket (a play on the usual utilitarian chore jacket) and made a maxi skirt out of water-resistant gingham (climate change skirt?). ‘Cloth of Joy’ is a collection full of hope and spontaneity, and one that I hope brings peace of mind and ease to the wearer.
