LET’S TALK SUNSCREEN

Let’s Talk Sunscreen

Mineral vs Chemical

So, now that we all know the importance of wearing sunscreen on a daily basis, let’s breakdown the different types of sunscreens and which one is right for you.

Mineral Sunscreens:

Mineral sunscreens contain Titanium Dioxide and/or Zinc Oxide – the active ingredient – and they work by sitting on the surface of the skin and deflect, as well as absorb the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays. They are sometimes referred to as physical sunscreens because that’s what they do; they provide a physical barrier between your skin and the UVA/UVB rays. They work immediately when applied. Prone to wearing off easily.

Chemical Sunscreens:

The active ingredient in chemical sunscreens include avobenzone, octinoxate and oxybenzone and they work by absorbing the UV rays, converting those rays into heat and releasing them from the body. These sunscreens contain active sun filters that absorb UV light to prevent from causing damage. They are thin and ideal for everyday use. Allows for skincare ingredients to be added easily.

Quick Tip: You can determine the type of sunscreen by looking at the consistency and packaging. Chemical sunscreens are typically less thick and more transparent, while physical (mineral) sunscreens will list zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide in the ingredients.

The Takeaway

Ultimately, the best sunscreen is one that you enjoy wearing a generous coat of and is compatible for your skin type. The bottom line is to wear whatever kind of sunscreen actually gets you to wear sunscreen.
