TikTok has rapidly become a hub for all things skincare, with content creators providing alternative tips, tricks and remedies for achieving glowing skin. One of the latest Korean skincare treatments creating a buzz online is rice water.

On TikTok, the #ricewater hashtag has been viewed over 787.7 million times, while over on image sharing platform, Pinterest, searches are up 100% for ‘rice water’.

Nick Drewe, trend expert at online e-commerce platform, Wethrift has provided insight into the skincare trend and why it has become so popular.

“Although rice water seems to be a particularly new trend that’s blowing up all over social media platforms, it has actually been part of skincare routines for generations, particularly in countries such as South Korea, China, and Japan. For generations, people from these countries have been using rice water to care for not only their skin, but their hair too – as it has many benefits.

“The trend is being driven largely by apps such as TikTok, as people consume and share content around the benefits of implementing rice water into your daily self-care regime. TikTok user and skincare influencer @tamsskyn creates content and guidance around using rice water for this purpose. In fact, one of her recent TikTok videos on the subject has racked up over 1.2 million likes and thousands of comments.

“The trend is also gaining plenty of attention across platforms, such as on photo-sharing site, Pinterest – according to Pinterest trends, searches for ‘rice water’ have increased by 88% over the last month.

“The rice water trend is a simple one to follow, and simply involves soaking rice in cold water to create the cloudy solution that you are likely familiar with when cooking rice. Methods vary from person to person, with some recommending that you leave the rice water to chill for several days in the fridge. Others simply recommend adding the rice and water, straining 2 or 3 times, and then applying to the face in a gentle motion.

“The key benefits of applying rice water as a face mask or serum is that it will moisturise your skin, whilst protecting your skin’s natural barrier and making it glow. As well as helping to make your skin softer, the solution is used to clear up skin issues such as spots and pimples.

“The rice water trend is part of the wider trend and keen interest in ‘Korean glass skin,’ as people adopt skincare routines that stem from Asian culture, with the goal of achieving clear and glowing skin. In fact, the TikTok hashtag #koreanglassskin has received over 80.2 million views.

“The Korean skincare movement is booming and its beauty trends are taking over the world. In fact, popular Korean beauty brands such as Soon Skincare, Glow Recipe and Peach & Lily appear to be expanding rapidly.

“Based on online search data and TikTok views and engagement, this trend is likely to continue growing and we will see more Asian beauty and skincare tips dominating the online space, and being incorporated into people’s daily routines around the globe.”
