Barbie is finally gearing up to hit the big screens next week, and the impact it is having on the fashion and beauty world is undeniable, with ‘Barbiecore‘ taking over.
As fans eagerly wait for the live-action movie to hit theatres, the star-studded cast gracing the red carpet in their Barbie-inspired outfits has caused a huge spike in the number of people searching for the Barbie aesthetic.
In fact, on the day of the movie’s first premiere on Sunday, Google searches for ‘pink barbie fashion’ spiked by a staggering 525% in a single day.
Nick Drewe, Trend Expert at WeThrift, shares his insight into Barbiecore:
“Barbiecore has always been fairly popular, but it has since exploded as we head closer towards the release date of the Barbie Movie. The trend is seeing a wave of people embracing the typical characteristics of Barbie, including hot pink outfits with matching nails, glittery accessories and bleach-blonde hair.
“We first spotted the trend taking heavy influence over the Valentino Pink PP Collection. Now, the style is making its way into the wardrobes of a-list celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Megan Fox, Lizzo, Hailey Bieber and more.
“The Barbie trend is dominating online, with the #barbiecore TikTok hashtag surpassing 488.2 million views.
“The style is all about looking pretty in pink. We’re seeing lots of matching pink sets, monochromatic looks and feminine silhouettes. Brands like Maison Valentino and Miu Miu have also started to incorporate the signature trend into their fashion lines, embracing colourful prints and textures that incorporate the modern characteristics of Barbiecore.
“It is interesting to see other Barbiecore-related trends emerging under different names. We’re seeing the term ‘bimbo style’ circulating heavily across the internet, encapsulating the common themes associated with Barbiecore.
“The barbiecore trend is also dominating photo-sharing app Pinterest, with searches for ‘Barbiecore’ rising by 150% over the last 3 months. The Barbie trend is also a driving force behind the growing popularity of early 2000s fashion – branded ‘Y2K fashion’. Pinterest searches for ’00s fashion’ have increased by 56%, highlighting how people are flocking to Pinterest for their retro fashion inspiration.
“It isn’t just across the fashion and beauty industries where the Barbiecore trend is taking over, though. It is even influencing interior trends, with the TikTok hashtag #barbiecoreinterior receiving 4.9 million views and counting, as users hurry to showcase their hot pink, Barbie-inspired interiors and accessories.
“With stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling fully immersing themselves in their respective characters, coupled with the fact the film is already garnering Oscars buzz for the 2024 Academy Awards, it looks like the Barbiecore trend will continue to surge and be the hottest (and pinkest) trend for summer 2023 and beyond.”
