So as a curly hair gal, I thought I’d throw in my two cents on TikTok’s latest strainer trend. I don’t know but I think the latest TikTok’s hair care trend will leave you speechless or maybe not. Hmmm

In stead of using hair diffusers, TikTokers have turned to their kitchen appliances to achieve voluminous curls. A TikTok video has demonstrated how a pasta strainer can double as a hair diffuser and be used to create bouncy beautiful curls. Since creator Liz Fox Rosebery shared this hair hack on TikTok, the video has 23+ million views and counting, with lots of copycats trying the trend for themselves.

Roseberry posted a video (original) of herself drying her hair with a strainer with the caption “just learned that my pasta strainer is better at diffusing my waves than my diffuser,” before revealing her full dry, tousled curls. She also posted a few follow-up videos on a more in-depth tutorial teaching viewers her exact method of diffusing curly hair. She advises that the biggest mistake is the use of plastic strainers. “You’ve got to use the mesh ones or at least one that has a lot of holes so the air can blow”, she stated.

When it comes to the blow drying, Roseberry simply gathered all her hair and placed it in her strainer while bent over. She recommended drying the roots first, then blow drying the lengths through the strainer by placing large sections of hair and holding the strainer up close to the scalp to maintain the waves.

Experts are saying that a lot of people do things with the intention of trending or going viral, and neither of those things equal amazing hair. One expert, Julissa Prado states “…Noting that it’s more difficult to dry your roots with a strainer covering them”, Julissa further added, “If the heat is too high, you’re at risk of burning your hair or your hand, which is why hair diffusers aren’t made of metal.” Additionally, hairstylist Sophie Rose explained that strainers can also damage your hair. “Most are using metal strainers that are designed to take on heat from boiling hot water but not heat from a blow dryer,” she said.

As someone with naturally curly hair, my advice is to proceed with caution. My personal take is that a good diffuser will allow you to achieve both volume and definition – without heat damage – and stimulate natural drying. A good diffuser will also evenly distribute air from root to tip, and help dry curls quickly.

We recommend you try the PATTERN Blow Dryer OR Curlsmith Hair Defrizzion Dryer & XXL Diffuser if you’re looking for options.
